چکیده

Measuring reading effort is useful for practical purposes such as designing learning material and personalizing text comprehension environment. We propose a quantification of reading effort by measuring the complexity of eye-movement patterns of readers. We call the measure Scanpath Complexity. Scanpath complexity is modeled as a function of various properties of gaze fixations and saccadesthe basic parameters of eye movement behavior. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our scanpath complexity measure by showing that its correlation with different measures of lexical and syntactic complexity as well as standard readability metrics is better than popular baseline measures based on fixation alone.

Scanpath modeling and classification with hidden Markov models

How people look at visual information reveals fundamental information about them; their interests and their states of mind. Previous studies showed that scanpath, i.e., the sequence of eye movements made by an observer exploring a visual stimulus, can be used to infer observer-related (e.g., task at hand) and stimuli-related (e.g., image semantic category) information. However, eye movements ar...

Guiding the mind's eye: improving communication and vision by external control of the scanpath

Larry Stark has emphasised that what we visually perceive is very much determined by the scanpath, i.e. the pattern of eye movements. Inspired by his view, we have studied the implications of the scanpath for visual communication and came up with the idea to not only sense and analyse eye movements, but also guide them by using a special kind of gazecontingent information display. Our goal is t...

Eye - Tracking Methods for Investigation of Cartographic Principles

Paper describes possibilities of the utilization of the eye-tracking technology to evaluate user perception and cognition of maps and graphic outputs from Geographical Information Systems. Eye-tracking is one of the most precise and objective methods of usability studies. The device investigates eye movements and can determine where the monitored person looks. Eye-tracking can help to understan...

Individual Differences in Scanpaths Correspond with Serotonin Transporter Genotype and Behavioral Phenotype in Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta)

Scanpaths (the succession of fixations and saccades during spontaneous viewing) contain information about the image but also about the viewer. To determine the viewer-dependent factors in the scanpaths of monkeys, we trained three adult males (Macaca mulatta) to look for 3 s at images of conspecific facial expressions with either direct or averted gaze. The subjects showed significant differenc...

Monitoring the Progress of Fast Reading Training with Use of the Eyetracker and Scanpath Statistics

The research on the human reading technique and text perception strategies needs objective evaluation methods. Our proposal consists in the use of scan-path recording and eye track processing results as estimators of reading skills and capability of error compensation. Visual tasks, being principal investigation tool, were completed by arrangement of texts for presentation, eye trajectory acqui...
